Tonnage measures how much heat an AC can remove per hour, not how much electricity it uses directly. A 1.5 ton AC can remove about 1.5 × 3.517 = 5,275 watts of heat per hour. Bigger isn't better — an oversized AC for a small room switches on and off constantly (short cycling), which wastes electricity and cools unevenly.
